Chapter 6
“I need you to sleep as well,” Cara said, hours later when the day was starting to wind down and Gregory had stepped away to resume his patrols around the camp. Claire had stayed with us, watching over us as Fiona and Gregory had requested of her, but she was allowing Cara and I a moment of privacy.
“What do you mean?” I asked, glancing around before leaning into her ear, “Do you have to show me something?”
She nodded, flicking her head at the nearby bed and waiting for me to get comfortable, or at least as comfortable as you can get with your arms still tied behind your back. Laying on my side and facing her, I finally felt the exhaustion of the day catching up to me, all the worry over seeing my best friend shot wearing my body out down to the bone and making my eyelids flutter and fall shut. I was floating in that inky blackness before I even realized it fully.
“Cara?” I shouted, “Are you there?”
The scene before me shifted, the blackness turning to snowy forest, the echo of my own voice turning into distant screaming and choking, I could feel Cara’s presence nearby but I couldn’t quite see her, even as it felt as though I could reach out and touch her whenever I wanted. But soon enough that was forgotten, because I realized that I remembered this scene happening in front of me.
“Wait, wait…” The hunter begged, clutching at his bleeding sides, “I’ve… I’ve got a son, alright? What about him, what’s going to happen to him?”
“He’s going to grow up without a father,” The shifter said, who I now realized was Anthony of all people, “What else do you think would happen?”
“You’re… not going to hurt him too?”
“No, we might be monsters, but we’re not going to kill innocent children. So if we’re not going to do that, what does that say about the kind of thing that you are?”
I’d seen this before, but why was I seeing it again? What was so special about Anthony being the one to kill this hunter…
And then it hit me, in exactly the same dawning realization that must have come over Clark’s father right before these two shifters tore him limb from limb and left him hanging from the trees for the crows to pick at. These two were going to be involved in something far more important than this, but this was potentially the moment that had started it all.
By the time the shifters were done with his body there was precious little to be recognized as belonging to a man, aside from a completely untouched face that anyone who knew him would be able to recognize on sight. They stood back, and when Anthony laughed breathlessly and shook the hair out of his face, I knew exactly who he was standing next to.
“That was fun huh?” Anthony asked, wiping a bloody hand across his forehead, “How long until you bring Fiona out
